There’s dust everywhere, and it’ll stick to the glass of your conservatory, meaning when you do want to use it, whenever this summer heat relents, it’ll look particularly dirty.

So, now’s a good time to clean it, but you need to be careful.

The dangers of cleaning the roof

Don’t climb on the roof!

The roof of your conservatory is unlikely to be “load bearing”, that is, they are safe enough for their own weight, indeed, they’ll be designed with safety in mind, but you can’t stand on them.

If you try to, or even try to crawl across them, you run the risk of falling through.

Of course, if you don’t fall through, there’s another danger with wet glass, slipping off:

Nope, if you want to clean your conservatory roof, you need to use some fairly expensive equipment, usually a telescopic brush and a ladder, but again, be careful where you lean the ladder and make sure it’s positioned safely.

The ideal way to clean it is with a clear mineral water (like we use), however other soapy solutions are OK as long as you clean them off with clean water or a jetwash.

Traditional soapy window cleaning liquids can leave streaks, which could make it look a lot worse that it does now.

Also, remember to close all your windows and vents, else you’ll spray everyone relaxing inside!

Don’t forget the gutters

You probably don’t need to clean your gutters that often, probably once or twice a year, but this really depends on the general maintenance of your house roof and if there are any trees or large plants around.

In one case, an old roof had lots of moss on it that was constantly falling into the guttering all around the house, including the conservatory. This meant it had to be cleaned regularly.

The easiest way is to use a ladder and some rubber gloves to simply wipe the gutters clean.

First off, the use of the pole means no standing on high ladders, which, let’s face it, is dangerous.

Don’t let the soapy solution dry

This will require some nifty hand-action to get right all the time, but you’ll have problems if you leave the solution on the window and it begins to dry.

So, as soon as you’ve wet the window, grab your squeegee and wipe it off straight away.

You’ll notice some window cleaners do this with a two-handed action.

Think Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid.

Wipe-on, wipe off!

Use more water

It’s a simple one, this.

Just use more water, a more dilute solution in effect.

This will reduce the number of streaks and make it much easier to wipe the window clean in one swipe rather than having to keep going over it to get it clean.

Use less soap

Pretty much the same tip as above, but in reverse!

Simply use less soap.

You’ll probably have to clean the windows more often, but little and often is probably better in this situation anyway.

Get a professional!

OK, it’s a cop-out, but think of how much time you spend cleaning those windows and what you could be doing instead!

It’s at this time of the year that DIY stores sell the most pressures washers and all the related accessories and householders decide it’s warm and light enough to blast away the winter dirt and oil.

These washers, however, have a hidden danger.

Although excellent at blasting moss and other detritus from the drive, they are extremely powerful and could, if used incorrectly, cause more damage.

If using the standard wand that is the default attachment to many, the pressure with which the water is fired out of the end is strong enough to dislodge bits of tarmac. It can find its way into even tiny faults in a tarmac drive and before you know it you’re stripping away at the top layer, revealing the weaker base course which isn’t so resilient.

If you continue, you could then start taking chunks out of your drive – not an ideal solution!

How to clean your drive safely

The first thing to bear in mind is that if you’re trying to clean oil or diesel off a drive then it’s far better to use a degreaser solution to loosen it first.

A jet wash on its own won’t do the job effectively. You can’t simply blast it away as it will be bound to the tarmac.

You should also make sure you buy a degreaser that is specifically designed for tarmac.

Some are for concrete or paved drives, and these could corrode and damage tarmac – check the label!

Refer to the instructions which will tell you how long to leave it on the oil because again, leaving it too long could cause damage. These are usually very powerful chemicals.

Then, using a detergent, jet wash the tarmac, holding the wand up from the drive so that it doesn’t get the full force.

This is usually at least 15cm off the surface, and hold it steady to keep a consistent distance.

Work your way around the driveway, and don’t be tempted to stay in one spot too long.

Time to clean the windows!

I decided to get up a ladder and clean them.
I bought a sponge and squeegee from Wilkinson’s and got to work.
After about two hours, I’d got a house frontage pouring with suds and was soaked through to the bone.
To get the suds off, I got the hose out and gave the entire front of the house a big spray. It looked ridiculous.
I am also glossing over the part where I nearly fell of the ladder. Twice.
To be fair, I did get the windows fairly clean, but I vowed never to do it again.

I needed a window cleaner

I gave it a few weeks before asking my neighbour for the number of his cleaner.
They guy was called Bob and he popped round.
For six quid he’d do the front and back!
Six quid! I’d spent more than that on the bucket, sponge and other stuff!
He cleaned the windows in 30 minutes.
They were spotless, and so was he. He wasn’t covered in suds and water and hadn’t fallen off a ladder.
The thing is, he was experienced.
Cleaning windows isn’t just about dipping a soggy sponge in soapy water, it’s about doing the job right, and safely.
